Calgary winters are tough on vehicles. Road crews lay down thousands of tonnes of salt and gravel every year, and that mix gets into everything: your paint, your wheel wells, your carpets, and the underside of your vehicle.

Why winter is the riskiest season

Salt is corrosive. Left in seams and on bare metal, it speeds up rust. Slush and grit tracked into the cabin grind into carpets and mats, and the dry winter air is hard on leather.

How to protect your vehicle

• Wash often. An exterior wash every two to three weeks strips salt before it can do damage. Pay attention to wheels, wheel wells, and lower panels.
• Protect the paint. A ceramic coating or sealant makes salt and grime far easier to rinse away.
• Guard the interior. Rubber mats and a monthly interior clean keep salt stains and odours from setting in.
• Do not forget the details. Door jambs and seals collect salt and can corrode.
